Our valorization strategy

Oncode Institute joins the forces of 800 researchers within 61 research groups at 12 different institutes across The Netherlands. We have developed an overarching valorization strategy to speed up the translation of new insights in cancer biology into tangible applications for patients, society and the oncology community. Our key objectives are

  • To accelerate the development of discoveries that will result in more effective and affordable cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • To contribute to making health care more affordable.
  • To create value for the Dutch economy.
  • To attract international investment and research funding.

We use a model of six channels of valorization and have dedicated funds for IP protection, technology development, clinical proof-of-concept and seed funding.

A tailored one-stop-shop

At Oncode Institute we have organized everything around oncology. In our institute we bring together 800 great minds at 12 different institutes. For all those researchers we have the valorization rights, regardless of their home affiliation. This effectively means that 800 Oncode researchers work in a single strategy focused on oncology and receive proactive support to bring their inventions to patients and society. At the same time, the Oncode valorization team is a single point of contact to connect translational and clinical research capacity, policymakers, Dutch & foreign industry, and investors to our fundamental scientists. We do this in any way that brings us closer to our ultimate goal: outsmarting cancer, impacting lives.

We have a dedicated team of experts with scientific and business experience focused on oncology. Strong interpersonal and communications skills, demonstrated networking capabilities, the ability to build effective relationships, creativity, persistence and a clear understanding of the academic, clinical and business environments are essential keys to our valorization success. Each research group within Oncode has a dedicated business development professional as a first point of contact. The appointed business developer spends time at the lab, understands the research programme of the group and proactively identifies and activates valorization opportunities. Based on the collective skillset of our team we can guide and assist with business development, new company creation, intellectual property, large public funding programmes, international collaborative research, knowledge transfer and communications.

External support

While our team brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and skills to the table, our tailored approach sometimes requires more in depth assistance and advice in a specific field. We have therefore engaged a network of external consultants in areas such as financial modelling, health technology assessment, pre-clinical drug development and regulatory requirements. The Oncode Exploratory Development Expert Support is an example of such external support.
